First Drive: 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser 250 (Prado) – Is it Worth the KSh 12M Tag?

Mechanical Team December 15, 2025 2,150 Views

First Look

The J250 Series replaces the beloved Prado J150. It ditches the "Soft Roader" curves for a boxy, brutalist design inspired by the 70 Series. But with a landed cost of KSh 12M - 14M for early UK imports, it is entering dangerous price territory.

1. The Tech: 48V Mild Hybrid?

Kenya gets the 1GD-FTV 2.8L Diesel (same as the Hilux/Fortuner) but updated with a 48V mild-hybrid system. This isn't a Prius-style hybrid; it's a "Torque Fill" system that smooths out the diesel lag and improves stop-start traffic efficiency in Nairobi.

  • Power: 201 HP / 500 Nm
  • Transmission: New 8-Speed Auto (Finally replacing the sluggish 6-speed)
  • Economy: Expect 11-12 km/L (Real world)

2. The Verdict

If you own a 2022/2023 Prado J150, hold onto it. The J250 is superior mechanically, but the current "New Model Premium" is excessive. Wait for the Japanese used market to saturate in late 2026 for better pricing.
